A therapeutic plush companion that turns medication time into comfort and play.
When one of our founding members was just nine years old, she came up with this idea. She had come up with the idea after developing a fear of taking medicine, specifically the taste, smell, and lingering sensation of each dose. When a school contest called for new ideas, she decided to create a stuffed unicorn that would allow children to take their medicine without fear.
What started as a child's creation, born out of both imagination and compassion, has evolved into a mission shared by everyone involved. Today, ten years after that original idea, we are finally going to bring that vision to life: we're creating a comforting companion that will give children the courage to feel brave, supported, and a little bit magical when they need it the most.
Adherence to prescribed medication is a challenge for children. There is a huge variation in the level of adherence between children, ranging from 11% to 93%, and approximately a 50% adherence rate based upon the specific illness/disease. Children do not always follow their prescribed medicines because they are too overwhelmed and/or anxious about getting their medicine and not because of anything wrong with the medicine itself (such as the dosage or delivery).
There is no other product available that addresses the problem of why many children do not follow their prescribed medicines, and that is the emotional preparation to take the medicine. That is exactly where Brave Buddy fits in to the medical world.
We developed Brave Buddy with the guidance of pediatric psychologists and nurses to make taking medicine more enjoyable for kids. Pediatric psychologists and nurses told us how to turn what can be a scary experience for kids (getting medicine), into a fun experience by giving the child a sense of security and calmness.
Inside Brave Buddy, is a child-safe, easy to use snap-fit dispenser, which gives the child a sense of control over the medicine that Brave Buddy will administer to them. At the same time, Brave Buddy gives the child medicine. Brave Buddy allows the child to play and engage in a fun conversation with Brave Buddy. In addition, Brave Buddy allows the child to go from feeling scared about getting their medicine to feeling happy and even enjoying getting their medicine, as if they were playing a game.
In order to validate whether Brave Buddy really meets the needs of families and health care professionals, we interviewed parents and conducted informal testing of Brave Buddy.
They shared that their children often refuse or skip medication, leading to stress, frustration, and longer recovery times.
They confirmed that fear and emotional resistance are major barriers during treatment.
They reinforced that children cooperate far better when they feel safe, comforted, and in control — and that familiar, playful objects significantly reduce anxiety.
